Where To Nordic Ski In Big Sky

February 8, 2019

While most of the crowds flock to Big Sky for world-class downhill skiing and snowboarding, there’s an entirely different world to explore in the area — Nordic skiing.

Montana is known as being the last true western frontier in the country; the last great place to experience unadulterated nature and vast blue skies. There’s no better way to partake in this aspect of Big Sky country than on a pair of cross-country skis.

If you want a break from the downhill or love Nordic skiing, check out these recommended Nordic areas around Big Sky.

1. Lone Mountain Ranch

Long Mountain is a few miles outside of Big Sky, tucked between the resort and Yellowstone National Park. The area boasts 53 miles of groomed cross-country trails, guides, and breathtaking scenery (the altitude helps with the breathtaking, as well).

This area is known for its elevation changes, so you get to experience all sorts of Montana wilderness. Start in wooded Douglas forests and make your way into open mountain meadows. Depending on the time of day, you might even spot a moose or elk in its natural habitat.

2. West Yellowstone

Have you ever thought to ditch the car and experience Yellowstone on skis? If you haven’t, you should rethink your Yellowstone itinerary. The Rendezvous Ski Trails weave throughout Yellowstone, starting at the western side of the park. You can take 30 kilometers of cross-country trails through forest land, cruising right between Yellowstone and the Continental Divide.

3. Bohart Ranch

If you’re looking for more guidance or a half-day lesson, the Bohart Ranch Cross Country Ski Center is a great option in the Big Sky area. Choose between daily clinics, technique clinics, and other lessons geared at different levels of experience.

With or without an instructor, you can glide up and down the 30 kilometers of beautiful, groomed cross-country track.

If you’re making the trek to Big Sky, consider adding Nordic skiing to your itinerary — if you don’t want to commit a full day or weekend to cross-country skiing, you can try cross-country for a half-day and downhill for the rest.
