Big Sky is one of the biggest resorts in the country with nearly 6,000 skiable acres on the mountain. Especially if you’re just spending a few days or even a week in Big Sky, it can seem overwhelming to get your bearings on the mountain.
Luckily, there are a few tried-and-true powder stashes around Big Sky that will help you maximize your time on the mountain. Don’t waste any time looking around for the best runs; instead, start with these recommended areas.
In general, keep in mind that the mountain’s south face gets the most sun, so the snow doesn’t hold well. On the other hand, Moonlight Basin is north-facing and tends to keep untracked snow.
If you’re game for a cat track back to the base area, Bavarian Forest is an excellent place to find untouched tree skiing. Just off the Dakota Lift, Bavarian Forest remains generally clear because people opt for the more convenient runs.
Be wary if it hasn’t snowed in awhile, as Bavarian Forest is south-facing and might be thin. On a powder day, though, it’s unbeatable.'
A bit less of an incline than the steeps of Bavarian Forest, Lone Creek Gully is usually amazing from December through March. To access this area, take Six Shooter lift, and then take Meriwether to the base of Lone Tree. At the top of the Lone Tree Lift, you’ll see an entrance to the gully.
